Fino a domenica 24 aprile 2016, la Wonderwall Entertainment presenta al Teatro San Genesio “You Never Can Tell “(Non si può mai dire), di George Bernard Shaw, spettacolo in lingua originale Inglese con: Anna Butterworth, Rishad Noorani, Antonella Micone, Edoardo Camponeschi, Helen Raiswell, Fabiana De Rose, Jim McManus, Michael Fitzpatrick, Grant Thompson, Jim Schiebler diretto da Michael Fitzpatrick, una commedia romantica che suscita ancora dibattito e curiosità, emozionando ed intrattenendo il pubblico con umorismo sagace.

Scritta nel 1897, priva di qualsiasi sentimentalismo, sarcastica e brillante, rientra tra le commedie definite “Gradevoli” (Pleasant Plays) della prolifica produzione drammatica di George Bernard Shaw. Racconta le vicende di un corteggiamento e intreccio amoroso di una giovane coppia ma anche le difficoltà (forse autobiografiche) di una famiglia, i cui membri sono troppo egocentrici per cogliere il valore del compromesso e del perdono. In quest’opera, si contrappongono da una parte abitudini e convenzioni rigide e borghesi, così descritte dall'autore, e dall'altra la sua fiducia nella capacità umana di superare le sovrastrutture sociali e di saper amare e perdonare. Shaw affronta i temi del legame matrimoniale, dell’indipendenza e affermazione femminile, delle ingiustizie sociali con una contestualizzazione incredibilmente contemporanea e riconducibile ai giorni nostri. 

Tuttavia, preserva nel racconto e nel testo un tono di leggerezza, riversando in questa commedia, tutta la sua filosofia positiva rispetto all'evoluzione creativa e alla forza vitale dell’essere umano; temi che riprenderà anche nelle sue opere successive.

La modernità che caratterizza questa commedia è resa dai temi universali che affronta, dalla scioltezza di dialogo, dalla vivacità del dibattito e dall'acuta caratterizzazione dei personaggi. Nel 1925 il premio Nobel per la letteratura coronò quasi sessant’anni di attività letteraria di questo commediografo d’eccezione, narratore e saggista irlandese, definito un enfant terrible, un dissacratore saggio e solido, un’istituzione dell’anticonformismo.

Deciso fautore di un teatro d’idee fondato su un programma di rigenerazione sociale, illuministicamente fiducioso della bontà e razionalità della natura umana, padrone della tecnica teatrale, è sempre in grado di calcolare e controllare l’effetto di ogni battuta. Sosteneva, in polemica con il repertorio del tempo, un teatro che fosse “una fucina di pensieri, una guida della coscienza, un commentario della condotta sociale, una corazza contro la disperazione e la stupidità, e un tempio per l’Elevazione dell’Uomo”.

Written in 1897, the romantic comedy You Never Can Tell provides a dual love story; it focuses on the courtship of a young couple but also on the possible reunion of family members who, in their indignation over past wrongs, are self-focused and unwilling to compromise. This play demonstrated that George Bernard Shaw could write light and witty comedy as well as the more serious "message" plays with which he began. It is also allegedly a dramatic revision of the troubled family in which he grew up, a revision in which (unlike the real family) all ends happily. Whatever the source of the play's family situation, however, Shaw did not write it simply to explain his upbringing but to dramatize many of his characteristic themes: a firmly held critique of serious societal issues and constraints on one side and a credible faith in the human capacity to love and forgive, on the other. The play reflects key social and political ideas occurring at the turn of the century, such as the "changing attitudes towards sex, pursuit, courtship, and candor." He also addresses the theme of the "new woman," as early feminism called her and though Shaw himself was an early and ardent champion of feminism, he also sees its possible excesses.  However the most central themes addressed in the play relate to Creative Evolution and "Life Force." This is Shaw's term for human vitality as the basis of all actions and achievements, and is regularly shown in his plays as the irresistible force that brings men and women together. Indeed he is masterful at creating characters with equally valid yet diametrically opposed points of view, and in You Never Can Tell he subtly weaves together his negative appraisal of matrimony and familial roles with an equally credible optimism in their durability. Altogether, You Never Can Tell is truly a "Pleasant Play," as Shaw called it, it is also one that energetically showcases the iconoclasm that made George Bernard Shaw world-famous. A delightful play with potent and timeless themes. The Nobel Prize in Literature was awarded to George Bernard Shaw in 1925 "for his work which is marked by both idealism and humanity, its stimulating satire often being infused with a singular poetic beauty".
