About the Play and Author This is the hilarious story of a theatre company trying desperately to put on a play in spite of maddening interference from a haughty author who keeps revising the script. The director/theatre manager of the company, Gerry, thinks producing the play is a good idea since the inexperienced playwright has agreed to let the company perform the show for no charge. Gerry, however, has no idea what disasters await her: the “murder mystery” plot doesn’t really have a murder and to top it off the playwright keeps changing the story and script only two days from its premiere! It doesn’t help that the cast is disgruntled and the playwright accidentally deletes the entire sound effect board. All of the disasters come to fruition when the company performs the actual show with hilarious mishaps at every turn. 

When the author decides to give a speech on the state of the modern theatre during the curtain calls, the audience is treated to a madcap climax and a thoroughly hilarious romp. Rick Abbot is one of several pen names for prolific playwright Jack Sharkey (1931-1992). Mr. Sharkey was born on May 6, 1931 in Chicago, Illinois. He began writing when he was 10 years old. He graduated from college with a BA in Creative Writing. After that, he taught school for two years from 1953 to 1955. In mid-1955, Mr. Sharkey enlisted in the Army. He served at Sandia Base, New Mexico as a Special Services worker. He wrote, produced, and directed one show per month for the Enlisted Men's Club. In 1958, Mr. Sharkey went to New York to begin a full-time freelance writing career. He wrote Science Fiction stories and novels, humor articles, and mystery novels.  In 1961, he returned to Chicago where he worked as joke editor for Playboy Magazine and then was Editor of the Allstate Insurance Company Magazine for 11 years from 1964-75. Mr. Sharkey wrote his first stage comedy in 1965. At the end of 1975, he went exclusively into playwriting, which he continued until a few months before his death. He has 83 published plays written under his own name as well as four pseudonyms - Rick Abbot, Monk Ferris, Mark Chandler and Mike Johnson. Mike Johnson wrote only stage thrillers. All the other plays are comedies and musicals. Mr. Sharkey passed away on September 28, 1992. His plays are successfully performed all around the world.

Play On! è l’esilarante storia di una compagnia teatrale che cerca disperatamente di mettere in scena un nuovo spettacolo nonostante l'interferenza esasperante dell’autrice che continua a rivederne trama e battute. La regista della compagnia, Gerry, è risoluta nell’intento di produrre lo spettacolo in quanto esente da diritti d’autore, trattandosi di una premiere di un’opera originale. Questo aiuterebbe dunque le finanze della compagnia. Gerry, tuttavia, non ha idea dei disastri organizzativi che l’attendono e non aiuta che gli attori siano scontenti e sfiduciati. Tutti gli imprevisti raggiungono un culmine la sera della prima con esilaranti contrattempi di ogni genere e quando al momento degli applausi l'autrice decide di tenere un discorso sullo stato del teatro contemporaneo, il pubblico viene trascinato in un finale totalmente esilarante. Rick Abbot è uno degli pseudonimi del prolifico drammaturgo Jack Sharkey (1931-1992). Nato il 6 maggio 1931 a Chicago, nell'Illinois, Jack Sharkey iniziò a scrivere a 10 anni, in seguito alla laurea insegnò per due anni e nel 1955, si arruolò nell'esercito. Nel periodo di arruolamento scrisse, produsse e diresse uno spettacolo al mese come attività ricreativa per le forze armate. Sharkey completò la sua prima commedia teatrale nel 1965. Dalla fine del 1975, si dedicò unicamente alla drammaturgia fino a pochi mesi prima della sua scomparsa.
